FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS PLAY THERAPY

Play Therapy is an age appropriate style of counselling that allows children to express their thoughts and feelings using play. Children take the lead in the playroom and engage with the therapist and the resources available on their own terms, giving the therapist insight into the child's view of themselves, their relationships and the world around them.
In the playroom, children are able to safely discuss and process their past experiences while the therapist responds in a way that helps the child build their independence, self-esteem and ability to self-regulate.
The child-led nature of this therapy makes it perfect for children of all ages and abilities. If you would like to have a confidential conversation to see if play therapy could assist your family, please reach out.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PLAY THERAPY AND TRADITIONAL COUNSELLING

Play therapy utilizes play and expressive activities to help children communicate and explore their emotions in a non-verbal way, making it especially effective for younger clients or those who struggle with verbal expression. Traditional counselling, on the other hand, relies on verbal communication and cognitive-behavioural techniques to help individuals of all ages understand and address their thoughts and emotions in a structured setting. We understand that one style will not fit everyone and often we use a multifaceted approach and combine different styles of therapy to suit each child.

HOW LONG DOES EACH THERAPY SESSION TAKE

Most appointment sessions will generally go for an hour. This allows for time for your child to comfortably settle into the room, a quick catchup with the parent if needed, ample treatment time and time to reset the room. We also offer 90 minute sessions if needed.

DO I NEED TO ATTEND THE SESSIONS WITH MY CHILD

Depending on circumstances, we generally ask that parents and caregivers stay in the waiting room during their session. This gives us the opportunity to build rapport with your child, and have you close by if you are needed for support or toileting etc.

WHAT SHOULD I SAY TO MY CHILD

We always recommend you give your child a truthful, age appropriate answer as to why they are coming to play therapy/counselling. You can tell your child that they are going to see (Therapist’s Name) where they can play games and solve problems together. They want to help you feel better and solve any problems, feelings or questions you might have. It's like going to a friend who knows a lot about feelings and how to make things better when we're feeling sad, worried or angry.

HOW DO I PAY FOR MY SESSIONS

You will typically receive an invoice within 48 hours of your session, with 7 day payment terms. Prompt payment is appreciated.
If you need an extension on these terms please get in touch.

DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING

The initial appointment will be for the parent/caregiver only and you are welcome to bring any reports and/or letters from other allied health professionals, GP’s and schools that can assist us.

WHAT IF MY CHILD IS TOO OLD FOR PLAY THERAPY

At NCPT, we see toddlers right up to teenagers and young adults and are able to tailor our approach to more than just play therapy depending on what the child needs, such as a more traditional counselling style with take-home strategies. We have a variety of resources suitable for older children/teens such as board games, art or sensory activities to engage in while interacting with a therapist and often they will enjoy the freedom of play without restrictions.
